There are some major differences in the various LED signs on the market today.  If you don't know what you need (or don't need), it's likely that you will not be satisfied with your LED display purchase.  The information below is intended to help you understand the basics of LED display technologies and provide a some guidelines during the purchase process.

What is LED?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and does not use a filament like its incandescent light bulb predecesor.   Because there isn't a filament where heat is generated (and lost) LED's are naturally more energy efficient.

How long will my LED Sign last?

Most LED Signs are rated to last approximately 100,000 hours (about 11 years).

What do I really need to know when purchasing a new LED Sign?

There are three basic industry terms for LED signs you need to understand:

Pixels:     A group of LEDs make up a pixel.  The number of LEDs in each pixel varies (1-25 LEDs).

Pitch:      The distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the next pixel - determines image crispness.

The tighter the pitch, the more pixels which results in better resolution.

Matrix:   The number of pixel high and the number of pixels wide - determines the physical size of the LED display.

Should I get a Full Color or MonoChrome LED?

It depends on the products and services you sell.  Full color can be more effective for some applications but not all applications.  If a detailed picture will help you sell your product then full color is the way to go.  They do cost more but if images can help you sell, the additional cost might be justified.

How big does my LED sign need to be?

There are several factors that must be considered:

  • Speed of traffic

  • Number of lanes of traffic

  • Viewing distance

  • Sign height/elevation

  • Displayed conten

If all of this seems a bit overwhelming, don't worry, we can help.  We will perform a site survey and gather the details of your location and application.  You can be sure we'll make sure you have the right LED for your application.
